IT industry must embrace a green agenda

The IT industry is not doing enough to implement environmentally-friendly measures, says a report.

These are the findings of a study jointly conducted by iomart and Green IT magazine and unveiled in early December.

Over 3,000 senior IT professionals were questioned as part of the survey and asked whether their company was contemplating or had already implemented a green IT policy.

Two-thirds of respondents conceded that their company had no strategy in place to introduce energy-efficiency measures.

Angus McSween, chief executive of iomart, commented: "There seems to be a real contradiction within the IT industry. Most IT managers and directors say they are concerned about the environment but very few have taken the time to formulate a green policy or scrutinise where technology costs figure on their company's electricity bills."

He added that the IT industry would have to face up to the issues surrounding its energy consumption and take appropriate measures to become more energy efficient.

Green IT magazine was set up to report on green initiatives within the IT sector and is currently distributed to 70,000 industry members four times a year.
