Employers in the science and IT industry must be more active in generating a viable environment for women to join them, according to Teresa Schofield, regional leader of the Global Marathon Europe, an annual worldwide forum that brings women together to have conversations about careers in those sectors.
"Companies have not responded to their skills issues by recruiting more women or working more with schools because there were huge initiatives supposedly addressing this that have not worked," she said.
She said that as a result of businesses['] lack of response to integrate more women, female representation has declined.
"There are few female industry leaders," she explained.
She went on to criticise the manufacturing and ITEC (information technology, electronics and communications) sectors in Britain for not having created new enterprises younger generations would actually feel encouraged to work for.
Those women who do join a company must be given the flexibility to work in a modern office "from career breaks and change sectors easily".
