IT industry developments 'help surge in online gambling'

07:02 24th September 2010

The recent developments in the IT industry plus a shift in demographics are behind the relatively recent surge in online gambling, according to Brian Wright, business director of the Remote Gambling Association (RGA).

He said the increased popularity of gambling online has come about because "the number of female gamblers is going up, along with the internet rate. A lot of that is to do with platforms like bingo, which is quite attractive to females."

The expert also said there's been a rise in the number of people gambling online due to faster broadband speeds, easier and cheaper access to the web. He added that technology like the iPhone now offers an enhanced experience.

The widespread popularity of Facebook and similar websites might explain why uptake rates had slowed, as they "just couldn't keep going up", Mr Wright said.

His remarks followed a press report published in the Times, based on a Nielsen study, which suggested that online gambling was more popular in the UK last year than social networking sites such as Facebook.
