Social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter could be helping the English language to evolve, say linguistics experts.
A statement issued this week by dictionary producer Collins said social networking sites provide a "very fertile ground" for the lexicon to develop, those enrolled on an IT training course may be interested to hear.
Collins noted the "immediate" language used on these sites, integrating new types of shorthand and jargon.
Twitter alone has already provided the English language with a number of new words such as the Twitterverse, and Twitterati, it added.
Responding to the comments, the Natural Language Generation group, based at the University of Aberdeen, described English as "dynamic" - having evolved from people using words in new and innovative ways.
Dr Ehud Reiter, a member of the group and the university's computing science department, said a number of factors, including social media and text messaging, are currently affecting its development.
"Language is not dead, but a living thing and living things change" he added.
