US proposals to maintain so-called network neutrality have been backed by some of the biggest companies in the IT industry.
The US Federal Communications Commission has unveiled plans to ensure that all data on the internet is treated equally, despite suggestions from some internet service providers that bandwidth-heavy data such as videos should travel slower.
However, the chief executives of a wide number of firms involved in the IT industry, including Google, Ebay, Skype, Facebook, Amazon and Sony Electronics, have signed a letter insisting that net neutrality is important to businesses, the BBC reports.
The letter explains that maintaining neutrality ensures that businesses are able to compete not on the size of information and data, but on the quality of that information.
The IT industry is increasingly looking at new ways to help businesses grow and as technology becomes more advanced, concerns have arisen that the internet in its current form may struggle to cope with the amount of data being processed in the future.
