IT managers are failing to accurately gauge their energy usage, according to a new survey by an IT consultancy group.
DMW Group conducted a poll of 100 IT managers, which revealed that 68 per cent of those questioned did not understand the energy efficiency of their data centres.
In addition, the survey found that while 70 per cent of respondents were concerned about future power shortages, only seven per cent were able to realistically estimate how much energy their IT is using.
"Too many companies are completely underestimating the size and impact of the problem," said Simon Williams, director of DMW group.
"If they continue to ignore IT's rapidly increasing use of power, they could face a double whammy of power interruptions and significant price hikes," he added.
Earlier this week, a study by Forrester Research revealed that IT security budgets are consuming ten per cent of overall IT spending.
