IT executives are becoming confused by green initiatives as the industry changes it focus to environmentally friendly IT, a new report has disclosed.
The research firm Gartner has revealed that the discussion of long-term and medium-term green IT products at conferences is leaving high-level IT professionals unsure about technology that is currently available.
To help executives, Gartner has split green IT issues into the immediate, the mid-term and the long-term.
The analyst identified that data centre cooling and virtualisation are immediate issues, green IT procurement, video-conferencing and behavioural changes are mid-term, while carbon trading, heat recycling and green building design and legislation are long-term problems.
Rakesh Kumar, research vice president at Gartner, said: "The IT industry is saturated with green IT talk. Unfortunately, with so much hype, users are left with a sense of confusion about where and when they should invest their time and money."
Last month, the government published a report aimed at encouraging UK businesses to innovate in IT.
