Many businesses find their IT energy consumption the most difficult thing to measure, it has been claimed.
Business manager for IT for sustainability at Siemens Brian Charlton said that as IT is variable in its uses and spreads out so much, people often do not know how much energy it uses.
And before an improvement to energy consumption can be made, a fuller understanding of current usage needs to be gained, he suggested.
"The first thing we have got to do is get a grasp on this and set a baseline, where we are, before we can determine how we are going to improve," he said.
Mr Charlton said that organisations need to measure their IT usage and that they cannot manage it until they have effectively measured it.
He made his comments at this year's Green IT Expo, which took place at London's Barbican Exhibition Centre earlier this week.
