The UK government has failed to foresee the gap in IT skills which now face the industry, according to a Labour peer.
Lord David Triesman, parliamentary under-secretary for the Department of Innovation, Universities and Skills, identified that improvements in IT skills are critical for the UK's IT industry to remain competitive.
According to Lord Triesman the government had not fully recognised the nature of the problem but had now taken positive steps to address the issues - particularly the initiative e-skills UK, which has developed a qualification framework, bringing together government and employers.
"We need IT skills, as we are going to earn our living from our brains," said Lord Triesman.
"We need to invest in skills, improve higher education, and provide incentives for innovative knowledge transfer."
Last month e-skills invited development and recruitment managers to an event called 'Apprenticeships - exploding the myths', which showcased modern apprenticeships in IT and Telecoms.
