IT Industry news: London 2012 'might bring improvements in the mobile coverage'

16:45 9th September 2011

The London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games should have a positive impact in the UK's mobile phone coverage, according to the Mobile Data Association (MDA).

The MDA represents and promotes all mobile data-centric businesses.

London will receive millions of visitors during the celebration of the games and that means millions of people using their mobile phone. The mobile network is going to have to cope with it, said Steve Reynolds, chairman of the MDA.

The independent regulator and competition authority for the UK communications industries, Ofcom, started to do some work with the existing network recently, but the aim must be to increase the power on the base stations, Mr Reynolds explained.

The more power, the better mobile coverage capacity, he added.

"At the end of the day the problem isn't necessarily coverage in London, it's capacity – the more people that use it, the less bandwidth is available and the slower it becomes," he added.

The London Olympic Games will be held from July 27th to August 12th next summer.
