ISP not responsible for illegal downloading, judge rules

In the first file-sharing piracy case to reach the courts, an Australian judge has ruled than an internet service provider (ISP) is not responsible for policing the internet for illegal downloading.

Australian ISP IiNet was taken to court by a group of copyright holders claiming that it should have stopped illegal downloading on its networks.

"IiNet is not responsible if an iiNet user uses that system to bring about copyright infringement the law recognises no positive obligation on any person to protect the copyright of another," The Age quoted the judge as saying.

In other news, government authorities in the UK have not been radical enough over how they tackle illegal file-sharing, according to Craig Priestley, founder of The Music Mag – a new music talent site.

"The fact is, the government doesn't want to upset the public or else they won't receive many votes. It has to be an agreement between all political parties to agree to the same rules or else nothing will be done," he said.
