The value of personal information and privacy protection has been underlined in a new report released by the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) this week.
Information Commissioner Christopher Graham said that privacy protection should be hard-wired into organisational culture and management since not only is it the law to safeguard personal privacy, but there is a business imperative too.
The document offers guidance on steps to gauge the costs and benefits of a privacy protection scheme, creating business cases for setting up a new programme or change an existing one, as well as assessing the value of personal information and putting figures to the business case.
In other news, companies found guilty of serious breaches of data protection laws could be fined up to £500,000 under new guidelines by the Information Commissioner's Office.
The ICO has announced a draft code of practice for its new auditing powers, which will come into effect in April 2010.
