Household internet access on the rise

13:04 28th August 2008

Nearly two-thirds of UK households are now online, according to the Office of National Statistics.

This is an increase of one million households in the last year and brings the total number of properties with the internet to 16 million.

The south east is the region with the highest level of access, with 74 per cent of its residents connected to the web, while the region with the lowest level is the north east with just 54 per cent.

In addition, the number of UK homes with broadband connections increased by five per cent this year, up from 51 per cent in 2007 to 56 per cent this year.

Adults under the age of 90 with a degree or equivalent qualification were most likely to have access, with 93 per cent connected online.

This uptake in numbers has been linked to companies such as Sky and Virgin offering bundled internet and digital TV packages.
