Identity theft from mobile phones jumped by 70 per cent last year, new figures by the Home Office have revealed.
"New technology creates new opportunities for the user [but] also provides criminals with opportunities," said Home Office minister Alan Campbell.
His comments came as the Home Office unveiled three new devices as part of its drive to improve security on mobile phones.
The Mobile Phone Security Challenge scheme, which is run in conjunction with the Design Council, aims to find technology that will both secure handsets and be user-friendly.
"Designing out crime can make a real difference and we are leading the way by using technology to protect the public," Mr Campbell said.
In other news, mid-market smartphone devices will become "progressively smarter" in 2010, according to a market analyst.
Conrad Longmore, editor at Mobile Gazette, said that the sophisticated handsets will offer features that would previously have been limited to phones at the top end of the market.
