High-tech industry receives £200 million from government

As part of a drive to boost skilled jobs in the UK, the government is investing £200 million in digital and advanced manufacturing businesses.

"This fund shows our commitment to the industries and the technologies that will create the skilled jobs of the future," Prime Minister Gordon Brown said at the Global Investment Conference.

He went on to say that the emphasis is on creating highly-skilled jobs in the UK.

The government pledged £100 million and the European Investment Fund pledged another £100 million. Money is to be distributed to technology-based businesses with growth opportunities.

In other news, mobile data traffic by 2015 will be more than 50 times higher than at the end of 2009, according to a market expert.

Speaking at the Mobile World Congress, Hans Vestberg, chief executive of mobile phone maker Ericsson, also forecast the number of smartphone devices would grow by four times and the traffic they generate would increase by more than 25 times.
