High speed broadband will allow businesses in Britain to access a series of new online services and applications that "the average UK business simply doesn't have the bandwidth for yet", according to a market expert.
Paul Richens, proposition manager at Eclipse Internet, urged the UK government to focus on making sure that "every part of the country has the right level of access".
His views emerged as Gordon Brown announced that the Labour Party will guarantee access to high speed broadband for every house in the UK.
The prime minister stated that super fast web access was "the electricity of the digital age" which should benefit everyone and not just a limited number of people.
"We say that Britain's digital future must be a future for all, not just for some. But if every household is to benefit, then it is fair that every household contributes to meeting this goal," Mr Brown said.
