Telecommunications provider Ericsson has demonstrated new network technology that could mean much faster broadband for consumers.
The firm announced that the new technology - incorporating a copper wire network and VDSL2based technology - could provide broadband speeds of up to 500 Mbps, which could be good news for home learners who rely on internet performance to facilitate their training.
Enhancing fibres with copper will ensure that existing infrastructure is optimised, meaning that more consumers will be able to access useful learning aids such as video on demand and HDTV.
Hakan Eriksson, chief technical officer at the firm, commented that the demonstration "confirms Ericsson's leadership in broadband access technology" and highlights the company's "commitment to the continued research and development of DSL technology to improve operators' business with new access solutions".
Earlier this month, Ofcom announced a series of measures aimed at inducing competition and development of high speed broadband capable of running at more than 40Mbps.
