Business requirements, not social responsibility, are driving green IT developments in the UK, according to new research.
A survey carried out by Forrester, at the Green IT 08 conference, revealed that 53 per cent of organisation with a sustainable IT agenda undertake such projects to reduce their energy consumption, while 41 per cent want to extend the lifecycle of their IT assets.
In addition, the poll found that 34 per cent of respondents are pursuing environmentally friendly IT strategies to stay ahead of forthcoming regulations.
However, Forrester urged IT departments to drive green initiatives beyond IT infrastructure.
The research company said: "IT infrastructure investments - such as video conferencing to reduce travel, or enabling double-sided printing to reduce paper waste - can enable a culture of sustainable business behaviour."
Last week, research conducted by the DMW group revealed that IT managers are failing to accurately gauge their energy usage.
