Green IT technology being promoted to SMEs

14:30 18th November 2008

A UK business has launched an initiative to encourage SMEs to embrace green IT technology, writes James Murray in vnunet.com.

Many larger businesses are attempting to cultivate an eco-friendly image in the wake of consumer concern about the environment.

However, SMEs are proving less able to pursue green policies but ThinkGrid is attempting to change that by promoting the use of products called thin clients that can be used instead of PCs to provide access to the internet.

Rob Lovell of Think Grid told the website: "As thin clients have no moving parts, using them to replace PCs allows you to move from using up to 300W per machine to using 10W to 30W per machine."

He added that the reduced use of energy to power the thin clients as well as the decreased need for air conditioning would slash the amount of energy used by the company.

A thin client consists of just the user interface without the additional software normally used in the mechanisms of a PC.ADNFCR-1667-ID-18881230-ADNFCR
