The IT industry could be harnessed more effectively by the government to deliver greater financial benefits, an expert organisation has claimed.
According to Intellect, the UK IT industry association, ministers need to be looking at ways to use IT more efficiently rather than simply seeking to cut projects in order to save money.
The pre-Budget report stated that £500 million will be removed from the government's annual spending by "reducing spend on IT", but Sureyya Cansoy, associate director at Intellect, warned that such a move should not come at the expense of developing new initiatives and improving the quality of IT provided to the public.
"Making those areas more efficient should not mean an overall cut on how much the government is spending on ICT," she said.
The government has announced plans to deliver internet connection speeds of at least two megabits per second across the country by 2012, in a move that could help more people undertake IT training courses.
