Government needs to be more proactive in encouraging innovation, an expert has been quoted as saying.

"When it comes to innovation there's a lot the government can do, and there's a lot they should not do," the president of the Consumer Electronics Association Gary Shapiro was quoted as saying by the BBC.

Mr Shapiro went on to say that the government "doesn't spur innovation or entrepreneurship. The government often gets in the way."

The president of the Consumer Electronics Association was talking at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) during a visit by Aneesh Paul Chopra, the first Federal Chief Technology Officer of the United States.

Separately, a national study by polling company Zogby International found that 96 per cent believe innovation is critical to the success of the US as a world economic leader.

In other news, IT departments should design applications to help businesses cope with the economic downturn, Forrester Research was quoted as saying in a news report.
