Government IT professionals must do more to safeguard against security breaches, says politician

16:00 24th November 2008

A Tory MP has prompted calls for the government to invest in IT handling training for those within the public sector working with sensitive personal data.

Grant Shapps revealed that 53 laptops and computers had been lost by government departments as well as mobile phones, memory sticks, BlackBerries and discs.

The worst offender was the Department of Health, while data losses were also recorded by the Department of Children, Schools and Family and the Department of International Development.

Mr Shapps commented: "With more than one official computer going missing each week, not to mention numerous hard drives and memory sticks, today we are calling on the government to urgently review data security right across Whitehall."

The latest security breach occurred earlier this month (November 2nd).

A memory stick containing usernames and passwords of members of the public who use the Government Gateway website was found in a pub car park.
