Google's voice search function, Google Voice, offers new opportunities for software developers, according to Andrew Pouros, chief operations officer for search marketing consultancy Greenlight.
Mr Pouros said Google Voice is "more than just speaking your search terms to instigate a query".
He went on to say that Google's voice search function may lead to developments in both advertising and search engine optimisation.
"Lots of small businesses will require search marketing support and services to help manage their presence within Google Local," said Mr Pouros.
He spoke of other opportunities the application offers.
He said that with voice recognition, search engine optimisation will now need to start looking at improving not only the textual content of a page but also the content of sound and video clips, to communicate to Google that the page and/or content is relevant for particular themes and queries.
His views come after market researchers Covario released a report showing that paid search advertising spend is expected to increase by 14 to 18 per cent in 2010.
