Search giant Google is hoping to challenge Microsoft with its new operating system Google Chrome.
When attending IT courses it is likely students will use Microsoft or Apple operating systems (OS), but if successful the Google OS could rival the market leaders.
When it is introduced in the second half of 2010, the new system will be ready to run on the latest generation of small netbook computers.
On their blog, Google's engineering director Linus Upson and vice-president of product management Sundar Pichai said they are planning to provide speed, simplicity and security.
"We're designing the OS to be fast and lightweight, to start up and get you onto the web in a few seconds," they added.
The OS will be for people who spend lots of time online and will come with a minimal user interface.
By moving applications online manufacturers can free up valuable processing power, which in turn can help run more powerful programs, such as those used on web design courses.
