Worldwide spending on PCs will increase by 12.2 per cent to $245 billion this year, analyst firm Gartner has predicted.
"The PC industry will be overwhelmingly driven by mobile PCs, thanks to strong home growth in both emerging and mature markets," said George Shiffler, research director at Gartner.
The firm expects mobile PCs to drive 90 per cent of PC growth over the next three years, accounting for 70 per cent of all PC shipments by 2012.
Shiffler added that mini-notebooks will boost mobile PC growth this year but their input will decline significantly afterwards, while desk-based PC shipment growth "will be minimal and limited to emerging markets."
In other news, demand for computers around the globe has returned to positive growth in the third quarter of this year, according to market analyst IDC.
The IDC Worldwide Quarterly PC Tracker said there was an increase for the demand of computers of 2.3 per cent after three consecutive quarters of decline.
