Global broadband revenue 'to top $184bn by end of year'

Global fixed broadband revenue will exceed $184 billion (£125 billion) by the end of this year, it has been claimed.

In news that could interest individuals in the IT industry, ABI Research states the figure totalled $170 billion at the end of 2009, representing year-on-year growth of 14 per cent.

The company revealed that the Asia-Pacific region is currently leading the pack in fibre broadband services, comprising 80 per cent of the entire market.

Fibre services alone will be worth $25 billion by the end of the year, the firm predicts.

"Triple play bundles and HDTV are options being touted to customers. These services also help operators to boost average revenue per user,” said ABI Research associate Khin Sandi Lynn.

"There is significant potential for broadband fibre service revenue growth," she added.

According to ABI, governments should be looking to encourage competition in the broadband market in order to lower prices, especially in developing countries with a slower technology uptake.

ABI specialises in technology market intelligence, particularly mobile marketing and tech investment.
