It is a great challenge to get almost every person in Britain to access the internet, according to Graham Walker, head of policy at the digital inclusion campaign Race Online 2012.
"It is a hugely challenging but realistic aim to get nearly everyone online in the UK," he said. "There are 40 million internet users in the UK, 30 million who use it daily, to help the ten million people who have never been online."
Web skills are possibly taught in IT training.
His comments emerged as the UK's digital champion, Martha Lane Fox, launched a manifesto with the objective to get everyone of working-age in the UK using the internet by the end of this parliament.
Mr Walker added that that the campaign has now signed up over 400 partners – including sponsors like BT, McDonald's and Microsoft. He said these companies are pledging to help 1.5 million more people access the internet in the next two years.
The move of job vacancy advertisements online and the most of the new jobs now requiring basic web skills are the key reasons why working-age adults need to be able to use the internet, he said.
