One of the IT industry's most famous figureheads has closed the door on a career that spanned 33 years.
On Friday, Bill Gates announced he would be stepping down from day-to-day duties at Microsoft Corporation, the company he founded in 1975.
Gates' story is one of the most remarkable in the IT industry. He dropped out of Harvard University in 1973 to concentrate on developing software, a pursuit that evolved into the formation of Microsoft.
Today, Gates is ranked as the third richest man on the planet. He will remain as chairman and a key adviser at the IT company but will be focusing his energies on the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the health and education charity he established with his wife.
In other IT careers news at Microsoft, the firm announced the appointment last week of Michael Delman as corporate vice president of global marketing, interactive entertainment business.
