The General Teaching Council (GTC) is the latest organisation to become involved in a data loss scandal, after admitting that it has lost personal records of over 10,000 teachers.
A disk containing the registration forms of 11,423 teachers went missing en route to the organisation's office in Birmingham, according to a statement released by the group.
Although this file was encrypted, the GTC is currently in the process of moving over to an electronic transfer system.
Alan Meyrick, GTC registrar, said: "Because we recognise that no encryption system can ever be entirely infallible, we have taken urgent steps to put additional security measures in place for the affected records."
Last week, the business services firm Logic revealed that UK businesses are ignoring the risk of security breaches and have a lack of awareness about how to manage data.
