French warn users over Internet Explorer

11:39 19th January 2010

Stop using Internet Explorer, that’s the widely reported warning the French government has given to internet users in the country over growing security concerns.

The warnings follow concern expressed by the German Federal Office for Information and Security.

"Pending a patch from the publisher, CERT recommends using an alternative browser," said the French Expertise Center for Governmental Treatment Response and Computer Attacks.

"There is no threat to the general user," a spokesman for Microsoft, Internet Explorer's maker, was quoted as saying by Computer Weekly.

Other analysts warned that users should be careful when switching internet browsers nonetheless.

In other news, despite recent efforts by Google to try to take market share away from Internet Explorer, the browser will still remain the most popular, according to John E Dunn, associate editor at enterprise IT news website Techworld.

"Internet Explorer will remain the number one browser for as long as Windows retains its dominance," Mr Dunn said.
