Formula 'could help save IT energy costs'

A new algorithm has been developed that could cut the price of energy bills for data centres by up to 40 per cent.

The formula was revealed in a paper entitled Cutting the Electric Bill for Internet-Scale Systems, which was launched at the SIGCOMM 2009 conference in Barcelona, Spain.

IT student Asfandyar Qureshi first outlined the concept in October 2008, before approaching researchers at software firm Akamai to obtain the routing data needed to test the idea.

Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology said businesses could reduce costs by up to 40 per cent by rerouting data on a daily basis to those locations where electricity prices are lowest.

Their formula weighs up the expense of increasing the physical distance needed to reroute information, against the predicted savings from reduced energy use.

The paper includes an overview of the sector, which suggests the world's biggest technology firms currently spend more than $30 million (£18 million) on electricity each year.

Costs have risen due to applications moving from desktop computers to virtual hosting networks, say researchers.
