The majority of companies in 2010 will opt to invest in upgrading or maintaining existing IT applications instead of implementing new software, according to a new study by Forrester Research.
Holger Kisker, who is a senior analyst at the firm, said that "despite all the hype around new technologies that have hit the market in the past few years, firms are devoting most of their IT spending on already-installed technologies."
According to the report, 41 per cent of enterprises and 21 per cent of SMBs plan to upgrade existing finance and accounting software, while 48 per cent of enterprises and 19 per cent of SMBs are looking to upgrade their customer relationship management applications.
In other news, the usage of free software plays a major part in the IT strategy of large companies, according to a market expert.
"Large organisations are perfectly prepared to use free software where possible, and upgrade to a fully paid-for version of the product where it makes sense for them," said Gary Fry, chief executive at Global Graphics.
