The falling cost of mobile communication has made it easier for more people to work while on the move.
That is according to 3 UK, which also asserted that the increasingly sophisticated technology was also a contributing factor to the number of people now able to work "where they want to".
Renato Bottini, head of business at the mobile media company, has suggested that people have become used to working in different ways and are now more willing to communicate differently.
He noted that working away from more traditional settings such as the office is now less to do with hours and the technology available and more to do with being able to choose "when and where" the work is done.
Mr Bottini said: "It's just an evolution of technology and people get used to using things in different ways. Instant messenger, social networking sites - they are all changes to the ways we work and the way we communicate.
"One of the previous barriers had been cost and that has been removed and it is now easy, cost effective and productive to work whilst mobile."
Fourteen per cent of respondents to a recent study conducted for 3 UK said that they believe it is completely necessary to be feel its essential to be contacted via email or phone so that they can feel in control of their work duties.
