Fab Labs are technical products which have the potential to "create new markets", according to the founder of the product.
Speaking after the launch of the UK's first Fab Lab in Manchester, Professor Neil Gershenfeld, director of the Centre for Bits and Atoms at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the man behind the Fab Labs, said that "in this world you don't mass produce products and ship them, you ship data on demand. It's very similar to the difference between high throughput printers and inkjet printers".
Fab Labs are machines which allow users to design, model and build countless advanced objects and circuits while working together with a community of Fab Labs scattered across the world via web chat or video link.
At the moment, there are 44 of these machines split between 16 countries, with ten further nations being in the planning stages for obtaining Fab Labs in the future.
