IT industry developments haven't been able to stop spam emails completely and people need to stop replying to them, according to Tony Neate, managing director of GetSafeOnline.org.
Mr Neate said email users have gradually learned how to cope with junk email and technology has been developed to diminish the volume of spam emails in people's inboxes.
However, he also said spam email hasn't completely been banished.
"People still respond to spam emails, and while people still respond to them there is a market for them," he said.
It is important that people don't reply to dubious messages because many of them may contain malign software that could cause harm to people's computers, he warned.
"There is a percentage that have a criminal basis behind them," he said.
His comments emerged as a fresh report by MyVoucherCodes.co.uk revealed that one in ten people are fooled by spam emails offering cash.
