06:43 2nd February 2011

The IT industry is suffering from a shortage of skilled people, according to Maggie Berry, managing director of Women in Technology, information portal for female technologists.

"If we are talking about shortages we might look at the calibre and the quality [of a candidate] with the right kind of technical skills. It is finding the right calibre of candidates which can sometimes be a challenge," Ms Berry said.

She went on to say that working in the IT sector offers great advantages. She said people looking to pursue a career in IT can look forward to a having a good salary and "lots of exciting roles" from which companies benefit a great deal.

In other related news, Tony Roy, the EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa) president of job site CareerBuilder, recently said there is optimism in the recruitment market, particularly in the IT industry, despite the economic crisis.
