The European Commission has followed in the footsteps of Britain and launched its own digital strategy.
Lord Carter's Digital Britain report formed the basis of UK's internet and computing plans and the EC has been quick to release its own document.
Viviane Redwing, EU commissioner for telecoms and media, announced the plan yesterday saying she wants it to promote competitiveness and help foster economic recovery.
Addressing the Lisbon Council in Brussels, Ms Redwing explained that Europe's digital economy has "tremendous potential".
If the commissioner's predictions are accurate people attending computer courses should be well prepared for Europe's developing digital society.
She described the growth in the uptake of the internet as "only the starting point".
"Europe promises to become even more digital in the years to come," Ms Redwing noted.
