'Education and training makes workers more employable'

The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) has advised workers looking for a new job to spend their spare time on education and training courses.

According to the organisation, it is the younger workers and those who have been in employment for a long time that are most likely to take on part-time roles.

Gerwyn Davies, public policy advisor at the CIPD, said the worsening economic climate is giving people the opportunity to travel and retrain.

"What we are also seeing is that workers welcome the opportunity to travel, to participate in hobbies [and] to spend more time with family," he commented.

Mr Davies advised that as employment outlooks are less favourable, people should be able to use their spare time to get a qualification.

"Qualifications are still the main criterion for employers when they are selecting candidates," Mr Davies noted.

The Confederation of British Industry's recent report recommended the UK work harder so it can remain an attractive global jobs destination.
