The use of ebooks should be a "shared experience" between the child and their parents since they are the real motivators, according to Dr Jeni Riley, a reader of literacy in primary education from the Institute of Education, University of London.
Dr Riley added that technology represented a fantastic way to get children interested in reading. "What they do is they make some of the mysteries of reading explicit. There's animation to encourage, motivate and engage the child," she said on the benefits of ebooks, gadgets whose use could be taught in IT training.
The expert went on to describe technology as a "powerful" learning tool but she also said the gadget isn't likely to replace real books. On the contrary, Dr Riley said ebooks are just another aspect of learning.
Her remarks followed new findings from VTech Storio which showed that over three-quarters of parents think that new technology has a big part to play in the education of children.
