The European Commission has released details of the first meeting of the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT).
EIT, which compromises 18 members drawn from business, research and higher education, held its inaugural meeting yesterday (September 17th) in Budapest, Hungary, following a short opening ceremony.
The group expects to create a good foundation for research and innovation in technology, adding that this unified European network would "further bridge the innovation gap between EU and its major international competitors".
In addition, the EIC discussed how it should select its proposed Knowledge and Innovation Communities, which are described as public-private networks of universities, research organisations and businesses, expected to start operating in 2010.
The institute expects to tackle issues including climate change, renewable energies and the next generation of information and communication technologies.
Earlier this week, the EU proposed to widen a deal that ensures global free trade for IT goods to include new types of hardware.
