The European Union is to invest 18 million in research it hopes will lead to the next generation of ultra-fast mobile broadband.
By funding research on Long Term Evolution technology the European Commission hopes it will be able to offer internet speeds five times as fast as currently available.
Viviane Reding, the EU's Commissioner for Telecoms and Media explained that the technology "will turn mobile phones into powerful computers".
"Millions of new users will get ultra high-speed internet access on their portable devices, wherever they are," she added.
The research, should it be successful, could help people in IT careers to achieve fast internet connections without the need to always be in the office.
Talking about the development of LTE technology, Miss Reding explained: "This will create tremendous opportunities and plenty of space for growing the digital economy."
Broadband analyst PointTopic has revealed that the UK has added 445,000 broadband connections in the first six months of this year.
