Downloading 'is becoming more important'

Downloading is becoming an important way of consuming music and it is becoming the key approach people take when buying singles, according to Martin Talbot, managing director of the Official Charts Company (OCC).

"Downloading has been growing steadily and substantially for five years now," Mr Talbot said, adding that "it is becoming dominant as far as singles are concerned".

His comments emerged as the official UK music and video charts organisation announced I Gotta Feeling, the number one single from US pop group Black Eyed Peas, is set to become the first ever million-selling download.

He said the success of this single highlights the importance of downloading music online.

Mr Talbot also said that, while sales of digital albums have been far slower than than those of digital singles, albums will move steadily towards digital over the next few years.

He also said that the music industry is not as severely under threat as some commentators would think because downloading is helping drive singles sales and helping album sales remain stable.
