Digital literacy vital to UK success

18:48 14th July 2008

An improvement in digital literacy is vital to the success of the UK, according to delegates at the Virtual Voices event.

Virtual Voices, organised by the creative media agency South West Screen, brought together young people, educators and media figures to discuss digital literacy.

After a series of debates the delegates urged the government to do more to educate citizens on the subject as digital literacy is crucial to the UK's global competitiveness.

Iain Dale, a political activist and keynote speaker at the event, said: "Developing skills in media literacy is essential not only for those young people who want to work in the industry, but for anybody who wants to understand the world around them and have their say on it."

In research conducted earlier this month by ebrary it was revealed that 51 per cent of students would “very often or often” opt to use electronic versions of books over print versions.
