Microsoft's Internet Explorer is losing its share of the web browsing market, new figures by measurement firm NetAplications have shown.
According to the group, Microsoft's browser now accounts for less than 60
per of the market, down from 95 per cent at its peak in 2003.
Internet Explorer's nearest competitor is currently Firefox, with 24.5 per cent of the market.
Dan Oliver, editor of .net Magazine, suggested that the decline was mainly the result of recent campaigns aiming to increase awareness of the other browsers available in the markets that perhaps users did not already know about.
"I think it just shows that the amount of press attention around the choice campaign really opened up peoples eyes to the fact there were other browsers out there," Mr Oliver said, adding that "once they started digging around, they saw that there was Firefox with its extensions and Opera which was a faster browser".
