Despite developments in the IT industry, breaches on data security are increasing, according to Amichai Shulman, Imperva's chief technology officer.
He said businesses should add more controls into their infrastructure which are designed to protect the data rather than just the infrastructure.
"We have more mature infrastructure controls today so attackers are aiming directly at the data layer. This is what an attacker is looking for – the data that relates to the business, personal data, commercial data, intellectual property and so on," he said.
His comments emerged as Imperva's research revealed that malicious intentions are behind 62 per cent of data theft. Their discoveries also revealed that the most effective data security system involves a modern approach that uses technology to protect applications and databases alongside traditional methods.
Separately, according to a survey by endpoint data leak prevention solutions provider DeviceLock, more than one in three IT decision makers is still failing to deploy any form of data leak prevention.
