Data quality is key in giving businesses an advantage over their competitors due to its close relationship to customer needs, according to Dylan Jones, founder and editor of Data Quality Pro.
Mr Jones noted that "there is a direct link between data and service", adding that "poor quality data invariably leads to inefficient and substandard internal and external services".
He cited bad system design, inadequate knowledge training and changing business practices as some of the most common factors that can cause data to reduce in quality.
According to Mr Jones, businesses that do not have in place data quality management strategies "are guaranteed to experience degradation of data quality".
His comments came as a new report by IT research and advisory firm Gartner said that data integration and data quality applications will be one of the most popular types of enterprise software this year.
Other sought-after software segments include virtualisation, security and business intelligence, the Gartner report added.
