A new government backed research project has been launched which aims to boost privacy and stem the flow of personal information on the internet.
The project, entitled Ensuring Consent and Revocation, will cost £3.6 million and involve a team of experts taken from the London School of Economics, Oxford University's Ethox Centre Legal department, Warwick University and HP's Systems Security Lab.
The aim is to provide public and private sector organisations with technologies and methodologies to monitor the use, storage, location and sharing of data.
Paul Hopkins, of Warwick University, said: "We are not just going to come up with one technology to solve everything, but technologies and services which will enable users to have more meaningful control over their data."
Earlier this month, research conducted by Forrester disclosed that IT security budgets are consuming ten per cent of total IT spending, as concerns over data breaches rise.
