Data centre managers set for 'challenging' 2010

Data centre managers need to be prepared for a range of complex issues that are likely to unfold over the course of 2010, according to new research.

A study published by industry analyst firm Gartner has warned rising energy costs and aging hardware will be the two main headaches for data centre managers, while the slow economic recovery will also make investment in these areas difficult.

However, James Cole, director of data centre manufacturer Keysource, has suggested that despite the potential pitfalls facing data centre managers, the sector remains full of potential, with environmental considerations at the top of the list of ways to boost the sector.

"The greatest opportunities [for enhancing efficiency] exist in the IT area for virtualisation," he said.

A recent survey of data centre technicians had 49 per cent of respondents citing a reduction in electricity consumption as a key motivation for increasing the green credentials of their data centres.
