Contactless payments to take off soon

Contactless payments to take off soon

11:59 30th April 2010

The popularity of contactless payment cards is expected to shoot up among consumers in the near future, as a growing number of retailers look to adopt the system.

Jemma Smith, head of PR at UK Payments, noted that high street chain Boots has introduced the payment means, adding that "we think as soon as a large number of customers and retailers take it on, you will see that more people will become aware and make use of the technology".

Despite a diversification in the use of payment methods over the last few decades, one area that has not evolved is low value payments.

According to Ms Smith, contactless technology would signal a convenient and valid change for such payments, as three out four cash payments remain under £10.

"We are a nation of card lovers and you would think it would not be a difficult step for customers already using cards, hence this could really take off," she noted.
