Consumers in the UK will play an important role in the future development of superfast broadband infrastructure, it has been claimed.
As the technology is rolled out, demand from consumers will decide whether the technology is expanded rapidly or not, according to Stuart McIntosh, a partner in the competition division at Ofcom, the UK communications industry regulator.
Speaking at the Westminster eForum keynote seminar the Future of Broadband in the UK, he explained: "There are varying views on the pace we should move towards NGA [Next Generation Access] and superfast broadband and, ultimately, that's an issue for consumers, the companies providing services to those consumers and the government."
Mr McIntosh described the emergence of superfast broadband as "potentially a world-changing issue", as the IT industry is able to expand and people looking to get into the sector will have greater opportunities to do so.
The Westminster eForum took place in London last week, examining the prospects for superfast next-generation broadband in the UK.
